What, how & why it happened?
Last Saturday, both my family and the neighbour’s children went to a beach for a picnic. We all got ready early in the morning and gathered in front of our neighbour’s house along by my dad’s car. Our neighbour’s parents came out with their children to bid them farewell before we hit the road. We set out for our destination at around 8:30 in the morning. While we were on the road, we took a detour to our favourite nasi lemak stall for a quick breakfast.
After our flavourful breakfast, we continued on with our trip. We even listened in on the weather and traffic reports on the radio. Once we reached the beach, there were only a few people around. My dad then carried the heavier equipment and we children helped out with the lighter load. Mom found a charming spot for us and we got to work with setting everything up. Dad was in charge of securing the beach umbrella and mom put on some sunscreen for us after we changed into our bathing suits to prevent any sunburn.
My neighbours and I had a race to determine who was the better swimmer. Mom made sure we swam only in the shallow end of the beach so that we wouldn't drift off. We splashed and kicked and laughed all at once in the water. Next, we went on to play with the beach ball my neighbour's younger brother had brought along. We even managed to get both my parents in on the fun as well. We all then moved on to building sandcastles under our beach umbrella when the day got hotter. I got to play a few songs from my playlist and we built our castles listening to great tunes. However, it was all for naught as my mischievous sister decided to act as King Kong and knocked down all our hard work. I was so frustrated with her that I took to chasing her into the sea again. We all ultimately had another mock race that turned into a game of tag.
At a quarter to two, we all started feeling hungry. Dad dragged out the assembled grill as mom took out the packs of marinated chicken from the cooler box. We all took some effort and time to cook our food, but it was worth it in the end as we all got our own serving of wings and shredded chicken burger with lettuce. We each had a can of flavoured soda to wash down everything after we ate. We all changed back into our dry clothes and started chatting amongst ourselves. Time flew by rather quickly as we talked and it was around 5.30 in the evening when we all enjoyed the sunset view presented to us all.
We started cleaning up our spot after we had our fill of watching the sunset. We gathered up all our food containers and leftovers and threw away all the waste into the nearby trash bins provided on the beach. We then packed up our things and placed them in the car. My dad dropped off our neighbour's children first then parked the car in our driveway. As we all marched into our house, I tilted my head back to watch the last rays of the sun disappear into the horizon. Lying on my bed facing the ceiling, a feeling of contentment rose within me and I slept like a log that very night.
